Let’s Talk About Senate Bill 828: Voting In Prison, Community Town Hall

Join Senator Mike Simmons, Rep. LaShawn Ford and Chicago Votes for a town hall on restoring the right to vote for people serving in state prisons, a key step in undoing the social harms of mass incarceration and expanding access to the ballot. People who are serving in state prisons deserve the right to choose the leaders who represent them.

We believe it is important for all citizens to maintain the right to vote. Ninety-five percent of people in prison return to their communities. Having strong ties to the community through civic engagement, specifically voting, increases the ability for reintegration, reducing recidivism, and making communities safer. 80% of the women in prison are mothers and that is diluting the voices of mothers in our democratic system in Illinois. Furthermore, due to disproportionate rates of incarceration, Black, Latinx and young people are disenfranchised at much higher rates.
